Yuhong Zhang Honored with Top Annual Award from Key ASTM International Committee

ASTM International’s committee on aromatic, industrial, specialty, and related chemicals (D16) presented its top annual award – the Award of Merit – to Yuhong Zhang, senior specialist/professor at Sinopec Shanghai Research Institute of Petrochemical Technology in Shanghai, China. The prestigious award, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest recognition for individual contributions to developing standards.

The committee honored Zhang for developing a new standard that analyzes seven different aromatics, while significantly reducing laboratory costs and improving within-lab and between-lab precision. She was also praised for developing all the standards required for a PTA specification, and for expanding Chinese participation in the committee. Zhang previously received the Award of Appreciation (2009). Fellow committee members have praised her work in standards development, which has greatly improved the functioning and abilities of the entire gas chromatography industry.

An ASTM International member since 2005, Zhang is a subcommittee chair of the committee on oxygenated aromatics. She has held her current position since 2015, having previously served at the same institution as a senior engineer and specialist. Zhang holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in environmental chemistry, both from Nanjing University in China.

In addition to ASTM International, Zhang is a member of the subcommittee on petrochemical of National Technical Committee 63 on chemistry of standardization administration of China. She is also a member of the Chinese Chemical Society, and serves on the ASTM committees on petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants (D02).
