Proposed New ASTM Standard to Protect Decks from Fire

A proposed new standard currently being developed by ASTM International Committee E05 on Fire Standards will establish a test protocol for assessing fire performance of decks and other horizontal exterior structures where combustibles beneath the structure can ignite.

ASTM Coating Thickness Standard Describes Measurement Procedures

Measuring the thickness of dry coating powders is an important factor in the manufacture of a variety of products. ASTM International Committee D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications has developed a new standard for this purpose, D 7378, Practice for Measurement of Thickness of Applied Coating Powders to Predict Cured Thickness.

ASTM Soil and Rock Committee Approves New Vibrating Hammer Test

A new standard recently approved by ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock is the result of requests from the Indiana Department of Transportation and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for an effective test method to cover the determination of the maximum dry unit weight and water content range for effective compaction of granular soils.

New ASTM Subcommittee to Develop Asset Management Standards

ASTM International Committee F36 on Technology and Underground Utilities invites all interested parties to participate in the standards developing activities of Subcommittee F36.60 on Infrastructure Asset Management. The subcommittee is currently developing its first standard.

New ASTM Practice to Assist Designers of Neutron Absorbers

Neutron absorbers have been used for criticality control in spent nuclear fuel pools and in spent fuel transportation casks for decades. However, since the late 1980s, as spent fuel storage pools have been filled, utilities have transferred spent fuel into dry dual-purpose (storage/transportation) canisters. The neutron absorbers used in dual-purpose canisters are subjected to different operating conditions than materials used in spent fuel pools.

ASTM Test Method to Assist in Sulfur Determination

Chemical plants and contract and research laboratories will all be likely users of a new ASTM International standard, D 7183, Test Method for Determination of Total Sulfur in Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Related Chemicals by Ultraviolet Fluorescence.
