New Aromatic Chemical Standard Provides Test for Monoethylene Glycol Impurities

A new ASTM International standard will help determine impurities in monoethylene glycol (MEG). ASTM’s committee on aromatic, industrial, specialty, and related chemicals (D16) developed the standard, which will soon be published as D8311.

MEG is used predominantly as a raw material in the production of polyester fibers, but it is also commonly used as a heat transfer fluid and a component in antifreeze.

Proposed Standard Provides Test for Coating Wettability

A proposed ASTM International standard will allow manufacturers to make better use of portable goniometers to measure angles of drops of liquid when applied to a surface for testing the wettability of coatings, substrates, and pigments. ASTM’s paint and related coatings, materials, and applications committee (D01) is developing the proposed standard (WK72334).

New Standard Will Help Remove Foreign Particles in Biomanufacturing Processes

A new ASTM International standard will help keep foreign particles out of biopharmaceuticals during the single use system (SUS) manufacturing process. ASTM’s committee on manufacture of pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical products (E55) developed the standard, which will soon be published as E3230.

Measurement Method for Organic Coating Thickness Described in Proposed Standard

A proposed ASTM International standard describes a way of measuring organic coating film thickness without destroying the coating itself. ASTM’s committee on paint and related coatings, materials, and applications (D01) is developing the proposed standard (WK68904).

Proposed Standard Outlines Use of Methodology in Forensic Sciences

A proposed ASTM International standard will outline the methodology used when an unknown item is introduced into a forensic examination. ASTM’s forensic sciences committee (E30) is now reviewing the proposed standard (WK72441), which was initially developed by a subcommittee within the Organization of Scientific Area Committees for Forensic Sciences.

New Standard Will Support Recycling of Gypsum Panels

A new ASTM International standard will allow the gypsum industry to continue to manufacture quality products while integrating recycled materials into their processes. ASTM’s gypsum and related building materials and systems committee (C11) developed the new standard, which will soon be published as C1881.

Environmental Assessment Committee Seeks Participation in Revision of Underground Storage Tank Standards

The storage tank subcommittee of ASTM International’s environmental assessment, risk management, and corrective action committee (E50) is seeking participants to help revise two underground storage tank standards.

The standards focus on performing evaluation of underground storage tank systems (UST) for operational conformance with federal regulations (E1990-16) and environmental management of UST systems storing hazardous substances or petroleum (E2681-13).  Both need updates in response to new regulations promulgated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Proposed Standard Helps Calculate Kinetic Energy of Simulated Rainfall

A proposed ASTM International standard will help calculate the kinetic energy of simulated rainfall in laboratories. ASTM’s soil and rock committee (D18) is developing the proposed standard (WK41200).

Proposed ASTM International Standard Addresses Ballistic Resistant Barriers

A proposed ASTM International standard will help define baseline performance requirements for ballistic-resistant barriers, panels, or structures that are used to protect against complete penetration of projectiles from small arms.

ASTM’s homeland security committee (E54) is developing the proposed standard (WK63319), which focuses on items such as rigid or flexible barriers, panels, or structures, either stationary or mobile.

Proposed Standard Will Support Police Headgear Assessment

A proposed ASTM International standard will be used to assess helmets and face shields worn by law enforcement officers. ASTM’s homeland security committee (E54) is developing the proposed standard (WK72061).
