A new ASTM International standard provides a more detailed and complete description of a test protocol that has been used for more than 40 years in code requirements and specifications for fire-retardant-treated wood. This test is now also used in some codes for building products that are not wood. The new standard, ASTM E2768 , Test Method for Extended Duration Surface Burning Characteristics of…

Consumers who are purchasing building materials for homes want to be assured that the materials are mold resistant. A proposed new ASTM standard will allow for a mold-resistance rating to be given to specific materials, depending on how the materials perform to the test method. The proposed new standard, ASTM WK32079 , Test Method for Determination of Mold Growth on Building Products Designed for…

A new ASTM International subcommittee has been created to develop standards that will be meaningful and accurate performance indicators to measure work-related injury and illness performance throughout the world. Subcommittee E34.55 on Occupational Safety and Health Performance Improvement is under the jurisdiction of ASTM International Committee E34 on Occupational Health and Safety. “Measuring…

ASTM International Committee D15 on Engine Coolants has formed three new subcommittees: Subcommittees D15.22 on Non-Aqueous Coolants ; D15.25 on Diesel Exhaust Fluid ; and D15.30 on Industrial Heat Transfer Fluids . All interested parties are invited to join in the standards developing activities of these new subcommittees., D15.22, Non-Aqueous Coolants, While there has been an increased interest in non-aqueous coolants industry, there are no current ASTM standards in this area. D15.22 will begin to develop such standards. “The envisioned standards for non-aqueous coolants would be performance standards, rather than ingredient standards, to allow for formulations that are not currently proprietary,” says Jonathan T. Light, chief engineer, Evans…, D15.25, Diesel Exhaust Fluid, Diesel exhaust fluid, often referred to as DEF, is required by many diesel engine-powered vehicles delivered after January 2010. More recent environmental standards issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have created more stringent emissions standards for agricultural, construction and forestry equipment. DEF is used to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, which allows original equipment…, D15.30, Industrial Heat Transfer Fluids, Members of D15 recognized that changes in the antifreeze industry, including new manufacturing technologies, improved inhibitor chemistries and recycling technologies, would likely be adapted to the facilities industry as a natural course of innovation. Because D15 has experience developing standards that are technically similar to the facilities heat transfer industry, it was deemed appropriate…, ASTM Committee D15 Next Meeting:, May 17-18, May Committee Week, Anaheim, Calif., Technical Contact:, (D15.22) Jonathan T. A series of proposed new standards being developed by ASTM International Committee D15 on Engine Coolants would remove technical barriers that currently prevent the cost-effective replacement of ethylene glycol with more environmentally friendly glycerin in antifreeze. The proposed standards are under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee D15.93 on Research and Long Range Planning. Natural glycerin is…

While standards for outdoor calibration techniques for solar radiometers exist, there are currently no general standards that deal with issues of indoor calibration transfers between radiometers of different design. A proposed new ASTM standard, ASTM WK27263, Test Method for Indoor Transfer of Calibration from Reference to Field Pyranometers, will address in detail issues associated with…

ASTM International Subcommittee E34.50 on Health and Safety Standards for Metalworking Fluids has developed three new standards. Two of the recently approved ASTM standards cover aspects of water-miscible metalworking fluids, while the third concerns prevention of dermatitis in the wet metal removal fluid environment., Prevention of Dermatitis, Dermatitis is an inflammatory response of the skin to a chemical or physical agent. While redness, swelling and itching are typical signs of dermatitis, symptoms can be more severe as well. A new ASTM standard, ASTM E2693 , Practice for Prevention of Dermatitis in the Wet Metal Removal Fluid Environment, discusses dermatitis and its causes and presents a comprehensive approach to dermatitis…, Metalworking Fluids, Two new E34.50 standards address the detection of microbial contamination in metalworking fluids: ASTM E2657 , Test Method for Determination of Endotoxin Concentrations in Water-Miscible Metalworking Fluids, and ASTM E2694 , Test Method for Measurement of Adenosine Triphosphate in Water-Miscible Metalworking Fluids. Both ASTM E2657 and ASTM E2694 measure biological contamination in metalworking…, Participation Invited, The subcommittee is currently looking for participants for an interlaboratory study for ASTM E2657 and ASTM E2694 . “We plan to use a single set of MWF for both standards, so labs who are interested in either or both are welcome to participate,” says Passman. “A few labs will run both the ILS’s for both standards, while most will run one or the other.” Subcommittee E34.50 is part of ASTM…

Explorations into alternative forms of energy have increased interest in standards for solar energy applications. ASTM International Committee G03 on Weathering and Durability has recently approved a new standard in this area, G197 , Table for Reference Solar Spectral Distributions: Direct and Diffuse on 20° Tilted and Vertical Surfaces. ASTM G197 was developed by Subcommittee G03.09 on…

All interested parties in the glass industry are invited to participate in the development of a proposed new standard guide for the safe handling of annealed glass. The new standard will be developed by a task group within ASTM Committee E34 on Occupational Health and Safety. A small group from industry and OSHA met in Rossford, Ohio, in March to discuss this new activity. The task group plans to…
