ASTM International Committee D15 on Engine Coolants has formed three new subcommittees: Subcommittees D15.22 on Non-Aqueous Coolants ; D15.25 on Diesel Exhaust Fluid ; and D15.30 on Industrial Heat Transfer Fluids . All interested parties are invited to join in the standards developing activities of these new subcommittees., D15.22, Non-Aqueous Coolants, While there has been an increased interest in non-aqueous coolants industry, there are no current ASTM standards in this area. D15.22 will begin to develop such standards. “The envisioned standards for non-aqueous coolants would be performance standards, rather than ingredient standards, to allow for formulations that are not currently proprietary,” says Jonathan T. Light, chief engineer, Evans…, D15.25, Diesel Exhaust Fluid, Diesel exhaust fluid, often referred to as DEF, is required by many diesel engine-powered vehicles delivered after January 2010. More recent environmental standards issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have created more stringent emissions standards for agricultural, construction and forestry equipment. DEF is used to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, which allows original equipment…, D15.30, Industrial Heat Transfer Fluids, Members of D15 recognized that changes in the antifreeze industry, including new manufacturing technologies, improved inhibitor chemistries and recycling technologies, would likely be adapted to the facilities industry as a natural course of innovation. Because D15 has experience developing standards that are technically similar to the facilities heat transfer industry, it was deemed appropriate…, ASTM Committee D15 Next Meeting:, May 17-18, May Committee Week, Anaheim, Calif., Technical Contact:, (D15.22) Jonathan T. The Resin Identification Code (RIC) system is a means of sorting different types of plastics from household waste. The RIC was developed by the Society of the Plastics Industry in 1988. The RIC assigns a numeral from 1 to 7, with a “chasing arrows” symbol around the number, to a piece of plastic to indicate its type. SPI recognized the importance of the involvement of the technical stakeholder…, ASTM Committee D20 Next Meeting:, Nov. 14-17, November Committee Week, San Antonio, Texas, Technical Contact:, Thomas Pecorini, Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport, Tenn., Phone: 423-229-5917; tjpec@eastman.com, ASTM Staff Contact:, Brynn Murphy, Phone: 610-832-9640; bmurphy@astm.org, ASTM PR Contact:, Barbara Schindler, Phone: 610-832-9603; bschindl@astm.org Release #8682/Sept2010

A series of proposed new standards being developed by ASTM International Committee D15 on Engine Coolants would remove technical barriers that currently prevent the cost-effective replacement of ethylene glycol with more environmentally friendly glycerin in antifreeze. The proposed standards are under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee D15.93 on Research and Long Range Planning. Natural glycerin is…

A proposed new ASTM International standard will facilitate more efficient recycling of a variety of post-consumer plastics. The proposed standard, WK20632, Practice for Marking Plastic Products for Identification in Reuse and Recycling, is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee D20.95 on Recycled Plastics, part of ASTM International Committee D20 on Plastics. ASTM WK20632 is based on an original…

All interested parties are welcome to join in the standards developing activities of ASTM International Committee D20 on Plastics. Current D20 projects such as the development of proposed new standards covering backed vinyl siding and bioreactor landfill conditions demonstrate the diversity of D20’s work., Backed Vinyl Siding, Subcommittee D20.24 on Plastic Building Products is developing WK18425 , Specification for Rigid Poly (Vinyl Chloride) (PVC) Siding with Foam Plastic Backing (Backed Vinyl Siding). Vinyl siding with an integral foam plastic backing has been commercially available for nearly a decade. Because backed-vinyl siding is a variation of the basic siding product, testing and third party certification for…, Biodegradability of Plastics in Landfill Conditions, A proposed new standard being developed by Subcommittee D20.96 on Environmentally Degradable Plastics and Biobased Products will aid in the determination of degradation and biodegradation of plastics in landfill environments. All interested parties are encouraged to participate in the development of WK18427 , Determining the Aerobic Degradation and Anaerobic Biodegration of Plastic Materials…

In response to changing emissions restrictions and consumer expectations, ASTM International Committee D15 on Engine Coolants is now developing a proposed new standard, WK16003 , Specification for Engine Coolant Grade 1,3-propanediol (PDO). This task group is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee D15.07 on Specifications. Edward Eaton, D15 member and chief engineer, Amalgatech, says that as…

While the polymer-based siding industry developed around the use of polyvinyl chloride, the last two decades have seen the introduction and rise in use of polypropylene as a siding material. Because of this, siding producers and polypropylene suppliers began to discuss the need for an ASTM standard for this type of siding. These discussions have resulted in the development and recent approval of…

ASTM International Committee D20 on Plastics is currently developing a proposed new standard that will be used for the determination of flammability characteristics of polymeric materials under laboratory conditions. The proposed standard, WK9492 , Test Method for Determining Flammability Characteristics of Plastics and Other Solid Materials Using Microscale Combustion Calorimetry, will be useful…

Quality control scientists, plant processing engineers and polymer formulation scientists are likely users of a new ASTM International standard, D 7210 , Practice for Extraction of Additives in Polyolefin Plastics. The standard was developed by Subcommittee D20.70 on Analytical Methods, which is under the jurisdiction of Committee D20 on Plastics. Practice D 7210 covers a variety of extraction…
