The need for a standard test method that would allow the determination of the complex shear modulus of bituminous mixtures using relatively inexpensive laboratory equipment has led to the development of a new ASTM International standard, ASTM D7552 , Test Method for Determining the Complex Shear Modulus (G*) of Bituminous Mixtures Using Dynamic Shear Rheometer. According to Gerald Reinke,…, ASTM Committee D04 Next Meeting:, June 8-10, June committee week, St. Louis, Mo. Among the proposed new standards that ASTM Committee E05 on Fire Standards is currently working on are two that cover aspects of fire exposure. Committee E05 is meeting in Atlanta in December and welcomes participation in its standards developing activities., Roof Field Vent Response, Embers from wildfires can travel through the air up to four miles away from the fire source, particularly in areas where wind is often prevalent during fire season. These embers can then enter structures through ventilation systems and other openings in a building envelope, resulting in fires being ignited from within a structure. A proposed new ASTM standard will cover a test for the resistance…, Fire Response, Subcommittee E05.14 is also working on ASTM WK25760 , Guide for Quantification of Fire Exposures. The proposed standard will cover fire exposure metrics that will be used in the development of fire test methods. According to Jon Traw, president, Traw Associates Consulting, and chairman of Task Group E05.14.08, the proposed standard will serve as a critical tool in the development of appropriate…, ASTM Committee E05 Next Meeting:, Dec. 6-9, ASTM Committee Week, Atlanta, Ga., Technical Contacts:, (WK23700) Gregory Daniels, O’Hagin’s Inc., Rohnert Park, Calif., Phone: 707-303-3660; gdaniels@ohaginvent.com ; (WK25760) Jon Traw, Traw Associates Consulting, Whittier, Calif., Phone: 562-789-7583; trawassoc@yahoo.com, ASTM Staff Contact:, Thomas O’Toole, Phone: 610-832-9739; totoole@astm.org, ASTM PR Contact:, Barbara Schindler, Phone: 610-832-9603; bschindl@astm.org Release #8423/Dec2009

More frequent worldwide use of asphalt-rubber binders in road building has increased the need for rotational viscotesters, which are used to ensure proper quality control and assurance. While an appropriate standard for viscotesters does not currently exist, a proposed new ASTM standard will answer this need. The proposed standard, WK25108 , Test Method for Measurement of Apparent Viscosity of…

While the use of digital evidence is fairly common in contemporary criminal investigation, there are still relatively few degree programs in computer forensics. A new standard developed by ASTM International Committee E30 on Forensic Sciences provides a road map for post-secondary institutions to develop degree programs in computer forensics. The new standard, ASTM E2678 , Guide for Education and…

Test for Solubility of Asphalt Materials in n-Propyl Bromide A new ASTM International standard on solubility of asphalt will provide an alternative for a solvent that has been banned as an ozone depleter by the Kyoto Protocol, an international environmental treaty with the goal of stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations that may help minimize global warming. The new standard, ASTM D7553 , Test…

The use of rolling devices can provide a means to evaluate the adhesion of weather seals, for quality control in new installations, general evaluation of existing installations, and the investigation of water and air leakage through building enclosures. In order to better facilitate the use of rolling devices, ASTM International Committee C24 on Building Seals and Sealants is developing a…

Many factors, such as traffic, drainage, structure and climatic variations, impact the field performance of asphalt concrete. However, asphalt concrete performance has been more accurately predicted when laboratory material properties are known, so ASTM International Committee D04 on Road and Paving Materials has approved a new standard, ASTM D7460 , Test Method for Determining Fatigue Failure of…

Current methods for determining bulk specific gravity of aggregate are often time-consuming and not ideal for quality control checks during construction. However, a new ASTM International standard provides a fast method for determining the consistency of aggregate properties that are used in asphalt and concrete mixtures. Committee D04 on Road and Paving Materials has approved ASTM D7370…
