A wildland-urban interface is a transitional zone between unoccupied land and human development. There are currently more than 40 million homes located within WUI areas throughout the United States. A proposed new ASTM standard will be used to alleviate the issue of fire conditions that exist due to eaves and other projections in structures that exist in WUI areas. ASTM WK37414, Test Method for…, ASTM Committee E05 Next Meeting:, June 23-26, 2014, June Committee Week, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Technical Contact:, John Simontacchi, Firefree Coatings Inc., San Rafael, Calif., Phone: 415-459-6488; jsimontacchi@firefree.com , ASTM Staff Contact:, Thomas O’Toole, Phone: 610-832-9739; totoole@astm.org , ASTM PR Contact:, Barbara Schindler, Phone: 610-832-9603; bschindl@astm.org Release #9529

ASTM C1264 Addresses Origin and Source Labeling of Drywall and Other Gypsum Products, In response to the importation of contaminated drywall that caused health and safety hazards when used in home construction, the Drywall Safety Act of 2012 (PL 112-266) was signed into law by President Barack Obama on Jan. 14, 2013. The new law cites ASTM International standard C1264-11 , Specification for Sampling, Inspection, Rejection, Certification, Packaging, Marking, Shipping, Handling and…, Labeling, The Drywall Safety Act requires the CPSC to set regulations based on C1264 , which was developed by ASTM Subcommittee C11.01 on Specifications and Test Methods for Gypsum Products , part of ASTM Committee C11 on Gypsum and Related Building Materials and Systems . The standard provides the CPSC, states, suppliers and consumers with an effective tool for supply chain communication by specifying…, Up-to-Date Standards, Under the act’s provisions, ASTM International will notify the CPSC of any updates to the labeling standard within 60 days; the CPSC will then have 90 days to disapprove ASTM’s recommended changes. If the CPSC accepts the most updated version of the ASTM standard, then the new version becomes effective 180 days after ASTM’s initial notification., Sulfur Content, Because sulfur content levels in drywall have been associated with elevated corrosion rates in a home, the act requires that the CPSC issue a regulation that limits the sulfur content for drywall manufactured in the United States or imported from abroad. In lieu of issuing a federal rule, the CPSC may adopt a voluntary consensus standard, developed by C11.01, that addresses the level of sulfur…, ASTM Staff Contact:, Thomas O’Toole, Phone: 610-832-9739; totoole@astm.org, ASTM PR Contact:, Barbara Schindler, Phone: 610-832-9603; bschindl@astm.org Release #9277

ASTM International Committee D15 on Engine Coolants has formed three new subcommittees: Subcommittees D15.22 on Non-Aqueous Coolants ; D15.25 on Diesel Exhaust Fluid ; and D15.30 on Industrial Heat Transfer Fluids . All interested parties are invited to join in the standards developing activities of these new subcommittees., D15.22, Non-Aqueous Coolants, While there has been an increased interest in non-aqueous coolants industry, there are no current ASTM standards in this area. D15.22 will begin to develop such standards. “The envisioned standards for non-aqueous coolants would be performance standards, rather than ingredient standards, to allow for formulations that are not currently proprietary,” says Jonathan T. Light, chief engineer, Evans…, D15.25, Diesel Exhaust Fluid, Diesel exhaust fluid, often referred to as DEF, is required by many diesel engine-powered vehicles delivered after January 2010. More recent environmental standards issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have created more stringent emissions standards for agricultural, construction and forestry equipment. DEF is used to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, which allows original equipment…, D15.30, Industrial Heat Transfer Fluids, Members of D15 recognized that changes in the antifreeze industry, including new manufacturing technologies, improved inhibitor chemistries and recycling technologies, would likely be adapted to the facilities industry as a natural course of innovation. Because D15 has experience developing standards that are technically similar to the facilities heat transfer industry, it was deemed appropriate…, ASTM Committee D15 Next Meeting:, May 17-18, May Committee Week, Anaheim, Calif., Technical Contact:, (D15.22) Jonathan T. Subcommittee E05.11 on Fire Resistance is responsible for two new standards recently approved by ASTM International Committee E05 on Fire Standards. FIRE-RESISTANCE EXPERIMENTS It is a common practice to modify the tests contained in ASTM E119 , Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials, in order to gather information on the effect of altering specific variables. However…

Several years ago, a housing boom followed by recovery from damage caused by Hurricane Katrina and other storms created a surge in the use of imported drywall in the United States, particularly in the southeastern area of the country. However, since then, there have been a number of complaints concerning corrosion and odors in homes in which some of this drywall was used. Interim guidance…
