Among the proposed new standards that ASTM Committee E05 on Fire Standards is currently working on are two that cover aspects of fire exposure. Committee E05 is meeting in Atlanta in December and welcomes participation in its standards developing activities., Roof Field Vent Response, Embers from wildfires can travel through the air up to four miles away from the fire source, particularly in areas where wind is often prevalent during fire season. These embers can then enter structures through ventilation systems and other openings in a building envelope, resulting in fires being ignited from within a structure. A proposed new ASTM standard will cover a test for the resistance…, Fire Response, Subcommittee E05.14 is also working on ASTM WK25760 , Guide for Quantification of Fire Exposures. The proposed standard will cover fire exposure metrics that will be used in the development of fire test methods. According to Jon Traw, president, Traw Associates Consulting, and chairman of Task Group E05.14.08, the proposed standard will serve as a critical tool in the development of appropriate…, ASTM Committee E05 Next Meeting:, Dec. 6-9, ASTM Committee Week, Atlanta, Ga., Technical Contacts:, (WK23700) Gregory Daniels, O’Hagin’s Inc., Rohnert Park, Calif., Phone: 707-303-3660; gdaniels@ohaginvent.com ; (WK25760) Jon Traw, Traw Associates Consulting, Whittier, Calif., Phone: 562-789-7583; trawassoc@yahoo.com, ASTM Staff Contact:, Thomas O’Toole, Phone: 610-832-9739; totoole@astm.org, ASTM PR Contact:, Barbara Schindler, Phone: 610-832-9603; bschindl@astm.org Release #8423/Dec2009

ASTM International Committee D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications, has approved two new standards that cover architectural coating touch-up properties and ink stainblocking of paint systems. Both new standards are under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee D01.42 on Architectural Coatings., Touch-Up Properties, When a home is being constructed, paints are subjected to a wide variety of drying conditions, which can lead to differences in appearance between the original coat and subsequent touch-up areas after the paint has fully cured. A new standard, ASTM D7489 , Practice for Evaluating Touch-Up Properties of Architectural Coatings Under Various Environmental Conditions, covers variations in color,…, Ink Stainblocking, Paint companies and raw material suppliers will be able to use a new ASTM standard to assess the capability of architectural coatings for blocking ink stains from bleeding through to a topcoat. The standard, ASTM D7514 , Test Method for Evaluating Ink Stainblocking of Architectural Paint Systems by Visual Assessment, represents a compilation and synthesis of methods that are currently being used…

Traffic paint plays an important role in maintaining the safety of roads. Subcommittee D01.44 on Traffic Coatings, part of ASTM International Committee D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications, is currently working on two proposed new standards covering the sampling of waterborne traffic paint and glass bead gradation measurement., WATERBORNE TRAFFIC PAINT, Ensuring that traffic paint taken from the field is tested properly in laboratories is a concern of paint suppliers as well as private testing laboratories, Department of Transportation labs, DOT striping crews and striping contractors. A proposed new ASTM standard, ASTM WK22312 , Practice for Drum and Tote Sampling of Waterborne Traffic Paint, addresses laboratory sampling issues. According to…, GRADATION OF GLASS BEADS, Glass beads added to traffic paint during manufacturing are necessary to ensure paint retroreflectivity, especially at night. A proposed new standard, ASTM WK23758 , Test Method for Measuring Gradation of Glass Beads Using a Flowing Stream Digital Image Analyzer, will be useful in the production and quality control of glass beads. “Digital camera technology combined with high speed computers has…

Shrinkage that occurs during the drying process is a major cause of cracking in concrete. However, application of shrinkage-reducing admixtures in the field has been yielding positive results, and engineers have realized that admixtures can mitigate cracking. A new ASTM standard currently being developed by Subcommittee C09.23 on Chemical Admixtures will set minimum standards for an admixture to…
