A large and diverse set of manufactured materials are in powdered form at one stage or another. No matter what the material is, from cement to metered dose inhaler ingredients, product performance is related to particle size distribution. “The strength of concrete is related to the fineness of the cement powder used, but the danger with very fine grades is excessive heating on setting,” says…, ASTM Committee E29 Next Meeting:, Oct. 6-7, 2014, October Committee Week, New Orleans, La., Technical Contact:, Alan F. Invented in the early 1990s, the tomographic gamma scanner is used in the nondestructive assay of radioactive waste contained in drums or cans. In the last 10 years, TGS technology has been industrialized, with systems operating in South Korea, the United States and Europe. A new ASTM International test provides users with a means of streamlining TGS procedures and practices, and it will be…

Flow characteristics of fine metal powders are important in filling dies for pressing of powder metallurgy compacts, which are later sintered and sometimes machined into finished parts. The flow rate, as measured by a new ASTM standard, determines the flow necessary for a precise quantity of powder to be introduced into the die. The new standard, B964 , Test Methods for Flow Rate of Metal Powders…
