ASTM International’s water committee ( D19 ) has approved a new standard that provides an easy and accurate culture method for detecting, Legionella pneumophila, , the primary bacteria responsible for Legionnaires’ disease. Legionnaires’ disease is a potentially lethal pneumonia contracted from the inhalation of, L. pneumophila, bacteria that has been aerosolized by contaminated water sources such as showers, pools and spas, or cooling towers. ASTM International member Jody Frymire notes that more effective water management practices can protect against potential Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks. “Laboratories, building owners, and water treaters can use the new standard to perform routine monitoring of, L. pneumophila, to evaluate whether water management plans are effective in removing the pathogenic bacteria and adequately reducing risk,” says Frymire. The new standard ( D8429 ) describes a method for detecting and quantifying, L. pneumophila, to meet water management requirements. Such requirements are necessary to regularly validate that treatment and control measures are effective in potable and non-potable water associated with industrial, commercial, healthcare, and residential settings. Frymire says the new method is easier to perform and provides faster results than other methods. This effort directly relates to the United…

ASTM International’s water committee ( D19 ) has approved a new standard that will help address global concerns about the concentration of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water supplies. According to ASTM International member William Lipps, the new standard required testing of nine complex wastewater matrices, each spiked in triplicate at three concentrations spanning the analytical range of…

ASTM International’s water committee ( D19 ) is developing a proposed standard that will help to accelerate the analysis of ammonia nitrogen in environmental samples. Ammonia nitrogen is a nutrient that can lead to oxygen-depleted and potentially toxic algae blooms that can kill fish. According to ASTM International member William Lipps, the proposed method ( WK42422 ) will eliminate the need for…

ASTM International’s amusement rides and devices committee ( F24 ) is revising one of its key standards to include a new section requiring owner/operators to have a documented record retention program. The standard ( F770 ) outlines information and establishes procedures for the operation, maintenance, inspection, and training for amusement rides and devices. According to ASTM International…, Media Inquiries:, Jaime Martorana, tel +1.610.832.9796; jmartorana@astm.org, Committee Contact: , Katerina Koperna, tel +1.610.832.9728; kkoperna@astm.org Release #11229 ###

A proposed ASTM International standard will establish a test method for obtaining acceleration data on water slides using human test subjects. ASTM International’s amusement rides and devices committee ( F24 ) is developing the proposed standard. Data obtained through the standard is crucial to developing and calculating the expected forces riders feel on a water slide. The level of these forces…, Media Inquiries:, Jaime Martorana, tel+1.610.832.9796; jmartorana@astm.org, Committee Contact:, Katerina Koperna tel +1.610.832.9728; kkoperna@astm.org Release #11216 ###

ASTM International’s amusement rides and devices committee ( F24 ) is developing a standard to establish new inspection and maintenance requirements for steam propelled locomotives found at amusement parks. According to Ron Lwin, a committee task group chair, the original manufacturers of historic steam locomotives are often no longer in existence and unable to give recommendations for…, Media Inquiries:, Dan Bergels, tel +1.610.832.9602; dbergels@astm.org, Committee Contact:, Katerina Koperna tel +1.610.832.9728; kkoperna@astm.org Release #11100 ###

ASTM International’s water committee ( D19 ) is developing a proposed standard ( WK74011 ) that would aid water treatment facilities in monitoring nitrosamine contamination. Nitrosamines are contaminants commonly found in water and foods, including cured and grilled meats, dairy products and vegetables. Because nitrosamines have been traced to a potential increase in the risk of cancer, their…, Media Inquiries:, Dan Bergels, tel +1.610.832.9602; dbergels@astm.org , Committee Contact:, Brian Milewski, tel +1.610.832.9619; bmilewski@astm.org Release #11083 ###

A new ASTM International standard will help to measure organic compounds that can cause significant issues, including pollution and carcinogen generation, in water. ASTM’s water committee ( D19 ) developed the new standard, which will soon be published as D7936. “This standard is focused on delivering clean water by monitoring the contamination levels that lead to implementation of the right…, Media Inquiries:, Dan Bergels, tel +1.610.832.9602; dbergels@astm.org , Committee Contact: , Brian Milewski, tel +1.610.832.9619; bmilewski@astm.org ###

A proposed ASTM International standard would provide the determination of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aqueous matrices. ASTM’s committee on water (D19) is developing the proposed standard (WK73235). The proposed method would be applicable for the rapid, and definitive determination of PFAS compounds in water samples ranging from clean water to highly contaminated wastewater. The proposed…, Media Inquiries:, Dan Bergels, tel +1.610.832.9602; dbergels@astm.org, Committee Contact:, Brian Milewski, tel +1.610.832.9619; bmilewski@astm.org Release #11040 ###
