Safety Equipment Institute Launches Metal Detector Certification Program

The Safety Equipment Institute (SEI), an affiliate of ASTM International, has launched a certification program for hand-worn and hand-held metal detectors that are covered in three ASTM standards (F3020, F3278, and F3356). The program deals with characteristics that should affect the model’s ability to meet the performance requirements of the certification standard. These characteristics include:

  • Detector,
  • Detector holder,
  • Electrical component charge,
  • Power source,
  • Raw material,
  • Size class, and
  • Change in manufacturing location.

These standards were developed by ASTM International’s security systems and equipment committee (F12).

SEI will now accept applications for hand-held and/or hand-worn metal detector approvals and is partnering with Intertek to conduct initial and surveillance certification testing for these metal detectors. For more information on this certification program, please contact Chad Morey, program manager, SEI.
