Revised ASTM Precision and Data Standard Provides Key Support for Interlaboratory Studies

A revision to an ASTM International standard supports precision and bias calculations for test method developers in the petroleum industry. The revisions to D6300 (Practice for Determination of Precision and Bias Data for Use in Test Methods for Petroleum Products and Lubricants) will ensure that it remains a valuable tool for interlaboratory testing throughout the world.

D6300 provides guidance for general interlaboratory study (ILS) design, execution and statistical protocols necessary for calculating test method repeatability and reproducibility.

According to Alex Lau of TCL Consulting in Ontario, Canada, the latest approved revisions introduce advanced statistical methodology to ensure that the design for an ILS is balanced (equal coverage of the complete range of the test method). In addition, a statistically reliable protocol will provide guidance on the minimum design and analysis requirements for interim repeatability-only studies.
