ASTM International Committee D33 on Protective Clothing and Lining Work for Power Generation Facilities has approved a revision to standard D 4260, now titled Practice for Liquid and Gelled Acid Etching of Concrete. The revised standard is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee D33.05 on Application and Surface Preparation.

According to Tamryn Doolan, president and CEO, Surface Gel Tek, the impetus for revising the standard was to acknowledge that hydrochloric acid is now available in two forms, liquid and gelled. Method B in the revised standard addresses the use of gelled acid, which had not been mentioned in previous versions.

Doolan notes that there are several benefits to using gelled acid, including (1) control and uniformity of profile: (2) ease of use; (3) horizontal, vertical and overhead applications; (4) safety due to reduced fuming and no air or noise pollution; (5) simplicity of cleanup.
