Proposed Standard Will Support Asphalt Roadway Construction

ASTM International’s road and paving materials committee (D04) is developing the proposed standard (WK64299) that will help in the design and construction of asphalt roadways. The proposed standard describes how rotary wheel testers are used to measure the susceptibility of asphalt mixture to rutting. 

According to ASTM International member Todd Arnold, the asphalt paving industry is moving toward balanced mix design, which aims to design asphalt mixtures that resist rutting and cracking simultaneously. 

Arnold says that agencies responsible for roadway infrastructure might find the proposed standard useful since it specifies the requirements of the asphalt those agencies purchase. In addition, asphalt mix designers and producers will be able to use the standard to ensure their mixtures meet requirements.

This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #9 on industry, innovation, and infrastructure. 

ASTM welcomes participation in the development of its standards. Become a member at www.astm.org/JOIN. The committee is looking for interested parties to use the equipment to run the test and provide usability feedback on the equipment and the test method, as well as the correlation of results to performance of the material in the field.
