Proposed New ASTM Standard Will Help Growing Water-Propelled Jet Pack Industry

A proposed new ASTM standard will support the safe, continued growth of a popular new recreation industry: water propelled jet packs. The proposed standard (ASTM WK47642, Practice for Water Propelled Jet Packs for Commercial Use) will provide guidelines and procedures for the operation, maintenance and inspection of water-propelled jet packs and equipment.

One of the latest trends in water sports, jet packs provide thrilling rides on and above the water.

“Water jet packs are a relatively new sport, which grew very quickly,” says ASTM member David Duprat, director of operations, Atlanticorp LLC. “Our main goal behind this standard is to keep the sport safe.”

Duprat notes that primary users of the proposed standard will be entrepreneurs and businesses that provide jet pack rental rides, with the possibility that regulatory bodies such as the U.S. Coast Guard will also use the standard.

The standard will encompass the full realm of jet pack-related products that currently exist. Not all products to be covered under the standard have the same specific functionality, but they share similar characteristics such as water propulsion.

ASTM’s subcommittee on Water Related Amusement Rides and Devices (F24.70), part of Committee F24 on Amusement Rides and Devices, is creating this standard. All interested parties, particularly those who operate water jet pack businesses, are encouraged to participate in its ongoing development.
