A proposed new ASTM International standard will be used to evaluate the adhesion of coatings applied to concrete when subjected to heated tire sections. WK14355, Practice for Evaluating Hot Tire Pick-Up of Coatings Applied to Concrete, is being developed by Subcommittee D01.47 on Concrete, Stone and Masonry Treatments, part of ASTM International Committee D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications.
 
“This proposed practice could be used to test any coating for adhesion and/or tire marking on concrete driveways or garage floors,” says Richard Potter, senior formulator, United Gilsonate Laboratories, Scranton, Pa. “The most likely users of WK14355 would be coating manufacturers that make coatings for driveways or garage floors and suppliers and manufacturers of raw materials that are sold or being evaluated to be sold to coatings manufacturers for end use.”
 
The proposed practice is used to evaluate the durability and adhesion of paints applied to concrete driveways that have been heated and then subjected to a compressive force with a rubber tire to simulate the effect of a car sitting on an exposed coated driveway that has been heated by exposure to the sun.
 
Potter says that the subcommittee is seeking more participation in the development of WK14355 and other standards that it develops. “We know that there are a wide variety of testing practices being used in various laboratories around the world,” says Potter, who notes that it is a long-term goal of the subcommittee to have uniform testing methods that can be reproduced by anyone who wants to perform tests.
 
“For WK14355, we would like to have input from anyone who has been using a proprietary procedure that could have input in improving it,” says Potter. “It is very difficult to exactly reproduce what happens in the real world with accelerated lab testing, so we would appreciate any input that could help this practice achieve this goal.”
