Proposed ASTM International Standards Aim to Reduce Fire Risk of Oxygen Systems

Experts that support safety in oxygen-enriched environments will meet Oct. 25 though 27 in Orlando, Florida to create and revise key technical standards.  ASTM International’s committee on “compatibility and sensitivity of materials in oxygen enriched atmospheres” (G04) encourages anyone interested in the topic to attend the free meeting at the Renaissance Orlando at SeaWorld (click here to register).
 
At the meeting, the group is planning to develop a new standard guide for oxygen fire risk analysis, revise a key standard (G93) on oxygen cleaning, and revise another key standard (G86) on mechanical impact ignition of nonmetals.
 
“This committee is passionate about oxygen safety, and we welcome anyone interested in materials compatibility in oxygen to join these important efforts,” said Elliot Forsyth, the committee’s chairman and the senior oxygen safety and forensic engineer at WHA International, Inc.
 
Notably, this meeting will include educational presentations on: oxygen fires, materials and components testing, and fire risk analysis. The committee also hopes to review the status of all of the test methods, guides, and practices within their portfolio.
