Proposed ASTM International Standard to Provide Structural Integrity for Grease Traps

A growing interest in a more durable structure for grease traps has resulted in the development of a proposed new ASTM standard, WK7686, Specification for High Density Polyethylene Grease Trap Interceptor Units. The proposed standard is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Subcommittee F17.26 on Olefin Based Pipe, which is part of Committee F17 on Plastic Piping Systems.

"The impetus for developing this proposed standard has been the result of numerous inquiries to our, as well as other, plastic pipe companies to provide a more corrosion-resistant structure for grease traps," says John Kurdziel, director of technical services and market development, Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc. "Depending on conditions, some of these units made of alternate materials are deteriorating after five years."

The grease traps covered by the proposed standard are most often found at restaurants, small food processing plants, and industrial sites, where they are used to help remove high grease content effluent prior to entering the sanitary sewer system. Kurdziel notes that this kind of grease trap is often located under parking lots or paved areas, so a collapse poses a real danger to the public. The proposed standard is intended to provide uniform dimensions, product quality, and adequate structure integrity for grease trap interceptor units.
