Proposed ASTM International Specification Supports High-Strength Steel in Bridge Cables

A proposed ASTM International standard aims to enhance the technology used to make high-strength steel wire and steel-wire rope used in bridges.  The standard (WK58959, Specification for Hot-Rolled Wire Rod for Bridge Cable), is being developed by ASTM International’s committee on steel, stainless steel, and related alloys (A01). The standard will apply to bridge cable wire with hot rolled wire rod.

“Bridges play a major role and occupy an important position with today’s modern transportation,” says ASTM International member Xiaohong Xu of Jiangyin Xingcheng Special Steel Works Co. Ltd. “The development of this standard will bring the latest scientific research to industrialization as well as promote the application of new technology of high-strength wire rod.”

“The proposed standard will provide great guidance for enterprises involved with wire rod, galvanized steel, and cable manufacturing,” says Xu.

The committee encourages representatives of relevant research institutions and manufacturing entities to join in the development of this new standard.

ASTM welcomes participation in the development of its standards. Become a member at www.astm.org/JOIN.
