Paul Giampavolo, president of Safe-Strap Co. in Wharton, N.J., has been elected chairman of ASTM International Committee F15 on Consumer Products for a two-year term.
Committee F15 has 50 subcommittees that each serve a different product area, including toys, playground equipment, candles, pool safety, and various infant and juvenile products. Close to 900 members participate on the committee, which has jurisdiction over more than 90 international standards that address safety issues associated with consumer use of products.
Giampavolo has been an active member of ASTM and Committee F15 since 2003. In addition to his work as chairman on the main committee, he serves on multiple F15 subcommittees and chairs F15.56 on shopping carts, and he previously served as vice chairman liaison and research for the executive subcommittee (F15.90).
Founded by Giampavolo in 1983, Safe-Strap provides safety and customer convenience products that are used in retail stores and amusement locations around the world. Giampavolo’s career has focused on the development and production of commercial child safety products and other related commercial equipment used in the operation of retail stores. He has made several presentations to the International Consumer Product Health and Safety Organization and the Food Marketing Institute on best practices and related child safety issues. He received the White House Recognition of Efforts in Child Safety in 1985 for the first shopping cart seat belt, and the Chairman’s Commendation for Significant Contributions to Product Safety from the Consumer Product Safety Commission in 1996.
Giampavolo is a member of several associations and organizations in addition to ASTM, including the International Consumer Product Health and Safety Organization, the National Safety Council, the Food Marketing Institute, the Retail Industry Leaders Association, the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions and Safe Kids Worldwide.
