ASTM International Opens Office, Hosts Meeting and Events in Singapore
Earlier this week, global standards organization ASTM International officially opened an office in Singapore. The office opening was held in tandem with the organization’s board of directors Meetings, which also took place in Singapore.
Taking part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new ASTM International Singapore office were Kathie Morgan, ASTM International president, Bill Ells, ASTM’s 2023 board chair, and Casey Mace, deputy chief of Mission for the U.S Embassy Singapore, among several others.
Through ASTM’s Singapore office, the organization conducts outreach and engagement in Singapore as well as the other nine members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Singapore is also the hub for ASTM’s additive manufacturing (AM) programs for the greater region, supporting strategic research and development to advance standards across all aspects of AM. Additionally, Singapore’s National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC) serves as a strategic partner for ASTM International’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE), and NAMIC’s CEO, Chaw Sing Ho, serves on ASTM’s board.
ASTM International has been an active partner in the region for twenty years. In 2003, ASTM signed a memorandum of understanding with Singapore’s national standards body, Enterprise Singapore. Choy Sauw Kook, Enterprise Singapore’s director-general for quality and excellence, was involved in several of ASTM’s activities during the week.
In addition to the office opening, and to shed light on ASTM’s growing regional ties and commitments, ASTM International’s board of directors chose to hold its 2023 spring meeting in Singapore. As part of their efforts, ASTM board members and senior leaders engaged in nearly two dozen targeted outreach meetings with key government agencies, technology and testing companies, research institutes, and other organizations. These outreach opportunities highlighted the value and importance of ASTM standards and established partnerships in Singapore and throughout the region.
“ASTM International’s board of directors and senior leaders were impressed and honored by the warm welcome and hospitality during our time in Singapore,” noted Morgan. “We are excited to build on our strong foundation as a partner for Singapore and the ASEAN region and look forward to many more years of sustained success and collaboration.”
During the week, ASTM International partnered with the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore to host a roundtable discussion and networking event on standards for the digital supply chain. The roundtable covered ASTM’s new digital information in the supply chain committee (F49), current challenges related to digital supply chains, importance of education and outreach, and much more.
ASTM International’s board of directors is made up of 24 leaders from a worldwide array of companies, associations, government bodies, and others. Learn more about ASTM’s board of directors at go.astm.org/governance
