New Standard Will Aid in the Development of Thermal Insulation Products

ASTM International’s thermal insulation committee (C16) has approved a new standard that will aid in the development of new insulation products.

The new standard (C1919) covers the measurement of steady-state thermal transmission properties of small flat slab thermal insulation specimens using a heat-flow-meter apparatus.

ASTM member Phalguni Mukhopadhyaya says that, in addition to being used in the product development process, the new standard will be helpful when larger insulation specimens cannot be collected during forensic examinations, such as failure analysis.

“Manufacturers, researchers, and forensic investigation laboratories will find the new standard useful,” says Mukhopadhyaya, who also notes that C1919 is used in conjunction with ASTM’s test method for steady-state thermal transmission properties by means of the heat flow meter apparatus (C518).

This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #13 on climate action.

ASTM welcomes participation in the development of its standards. The thermal insulation committee is currently looking for laboratories that can participate in round-robin testing for the new standard. Become a member at www.astm.org/JOIN.
