New Thermal Insulation Standard Covers Metal Jacketing Installation

A new ASTM International standard covers installation techniques for metal jacketing on mechanical insulation systems. ASTM’s thermal insulation committee (C16) developed the new standard, soon to be available as C1879.

Metal jacketing is used as the protective cover over pipe and rigid tubing insulation in most outdoor applications, which include oil, gas, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, food/beverage manufacture and storage, chilled water, potable water, and sewer systems.

According to ASTM International member Jim Young, there are several C16 standards that cover materials used for metal jacketing, but C1879 is the first that deals with installation.

“Proper installation of metal jacketing is critical to the long-term success of an insulation system,” says Young, who chaired the task group responsible for the standard. “An insulation system using the best materials will fail quickly with improper installation.”

Young notes that insulation system installation contractors, facility owners, and specifying engineers will find the new standard useful.

“The new standard can serve as a uniform starting point for more specific installation methods or can serve as a standalone instruction for installation of metal jacketing over insulation on pipe and rigid tubing,” says Young. “This eliminates the need for the facility owner or specifying engineer to write their own installation methods and will help assure a high quality installation.”

This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals #7 on affordable and clean energy and #13 on climate action.
