Printing Ink Vehicle Definitions to Be Compiled in ASTM Terminology Standard

A proposed new ASTM standard will be the first compilation of definitions for terms commonly used in the printing ink vehicle industry. ASTM WK35704, Terminology for Printing Ink Vehicles and Related Materials, is being developed by Subcommittee D01.37 on Ink Vehicles, part of ASTM International Committee D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications.

“ASTM WK35704 will contain terms used to describe raw materials, processing/manufacturing and testing of printing ink vehicles,” says John Daugherty, manager of new business development, Superior Printing Ink, and a D01 member.

According to Daugherty, ASTM WK35704 will be important because it will allow suppliers and users to use terms without any confusion or misunderstanding. Primary users of the proposed standard, once it has been approved, will be manufacturers of resins, ink oils, alkyds, vehicles and printing inks.

Daugherty notes that participants are welcome to participate in the development of ASTM WK35704 and other proposed D01.37 standards, including the following:

ASTM WK27364, Practice for Preparation of Oil-Based Ink Resin Solutions Using the
Thermotronic II Varnish Cooker;
ASTM WK27365, Test Method for Methanol Number; and
ASTM WK27366, Practice for Accelerated Storage Stability of Energy Curable Vehicles.
