New ASTM International Self-Consolidating Concrete Standard Provides Test for Stability

A new ASTM standard, C 1610/C 1610M, Test Method for Static Segregation of Self-Consolidating Concrete Using Column Technique, satisfies a need within the industry for a test method to measure the stability of self-consolidating concrete. The standard is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee C09.47 on Self-Consolidating Concrete, which is part of ASTM International Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates.

Since its introduction in the United States and Canada in 2000, self-consolidating concrete has been used by producers to help facilitate placement, increase production and improve concrete quality and appearance. “Self-consolidating concrete is changing the way concrete is being placed in today’s construction environment,” says Mark Bury, product line manager, BASF Admixtures, Inc. “Technological advancements in admixtures and mix proportioning have resulted in a more fluid and stable concrete without the need for vibration for consolidation.”

Test Method C 1610/C 1610M provides users with a procedure to determine the potential static segregation of self-consolidating concrete. Using the standard, a producer can develop a set of mix proportions for a project that assures the user that the relatively fluid mix will be stable. A cohesive self-consolidating concrete is especially important for deep-section application such as walls or columns; therefore, the degree of segregation, as measured by the test method, can indicate if a mixture is suitable for the application. In addition to stability, another key property of self-consolidating concrete that had to be addressed was its ability to flow. Standards C 1611/C 1611M, Test Method for Slump Flow of Self-Consolidating Concrete, and C 1621/C 1621M, Test Method for Passing Ability of Self-Consolidating Concrete by J-Ring, address flow issues.

Subcommittee C09.47 encourages contributions and input from concrete producers and testing labs in participating in round robin testing for C 1610/C 1610M, as well as in the development of new self-consolidating concrete standards.
