Modified Bitumen Membrane Standard Approved by ASTM Roofing and Waterproofing Committee

A new ASTM International standard will provide how-to information to consultants and contractors for assessing the condition of a roof to be coated and recommendations on how to prepare a roof for a coating.

The new standard, ASTM D7120, Guide for Evaluation and Preparation of Roof Membranes for Coating   Application, was developed by Subcommittee D08.20 on Roofing Membrane Systems, part of ASTM International Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing.

“Coating a roof is one way to extend its life and create a reflective roof surface that will comply with industry reflectivity requirements, reduce the heat island effect and save energy,” says Carter Slusher, modified bitumen/polyiso systems engineer, Firestone Building Products, and chair of several task groups within D08.

Slusher says that use of the new standard will promote energy savings, environmental preservation and sustainability, all of which are top priorities in the building industry today.
