ASTM International to Participate in UN COP29 Conference

ASTM granted provisional observer status at United Nations conference in November

Global standards organization ASTM International has been granted provisional observer status at the 29thsession of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This major annual event will be held Nov. 11-22, 2024, in Baku, Azerbaijan.

With a goal of advancing science-based, consensus solutions ASTM’s COP29 activities will showcase efforts currently underway across several key areas, with a focus on:

  • Climate
    • climate mapping
    • environmental, social, and economic considerations
  • Additive manufacturing
    • supporting the circular economy
    • improving efficiency in production time, material resources, enhancing supply chain localization
    • creating economic opportunities for remote or small geographies
  • Sustainable/resilient construction
    • lower carbon materials and carbon neutralization of materials
    • minimization of construction waste
    • manufacturing or producing better materials
    • innovation in construction practices

 

To support awareness of ASTM’s role in providing technical solutions developed by global scientific experts to address climate action, ASTM is partnering with the following organizations, among others:

  • The International Code Council (ICC); and
  • Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE) (ASTM is a BCSE sponsor)

ASTM holds special consultative status within the United Nations and has participated in various activities and initiatives. UN committees and agencies have recognized or cited many ASTM standards, many of which support the achievement of 12 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
