ASTM International Honors Larry Carbary with Werner H. Gumpertz Award

ASTM International’s committee C24 has presented the Werner H. Gumpertz Award to Larry Carbary. This eminent award, given to Carbary by the committee on building seals and sealants, is conferred for significant professional contributions to the field of building technology and multidisciplinary technical problem-solving in the construction industry. 

Carbary was recognized for his role in creating standards with ASTM that stabilized the industry in the 1980s, his mentorship in the organization, and his world-leading career in research and development of the building envelope. He had been previously honored with such awards with the Lou Toporcer Sealants Hall of Fame Award (2005), the Award of Merit (2007), and membership in the ASTM Board of Directors (2015-2017).

Carbary’s career spanned 37 years, and before his retirement in 2019 he served as a construction industry fellow at Dow Performance Silicones. In 1982, he graduated from Michigan Technological University with a bachelor of science in chemical engineering. He is also an internationally recognized author and speaker on the performance of building facades.  He represented the USA as a member of the International Organization for Standardization.
