New Wire Rod and Bridge Cable Specification Standard Released

New standard to help strengthen steel wire and cables worldwide

ASTM International’s steel, stainless steel, and related alloys committee (A01) as approved a new standard, specifying wire rods used for bridge cable wire. The new standard (A1125/A1125M) promotes the development of key basic materials for primarily suspension cables, stay cables, and slings in the key bearing parts of bridge; the application of new processes and technologies in the world cable industry will also accelerate the development of bridge cable.

A1125/A1125M provides guidance for manufacturing wire rod and galvanized steel wire and cable. Further guidance will be provided in organizing production and inspection, helping buyers choose materials and perform acceptance and arbitration.

“Bridge cable is the main stress component whose technical requirements are demanding and special” states Yun Bai, an organizational member of Jiangyin Xingcheng Special Steel Works Co., Ltd, who worked on the standard. Bai continued “…the bridge cable structures, composed of high strength steel wire and steel wire rope, etc., are widely used.”

A1125/A1125M follows the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 9 (Industry, Innovation, Infrastructure) and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
