A new ASTM International standard could help improve the properties of soils used for landscape beds, sports fields, and golf courses. The organization’s committee on soil and rock (D18) created the new standard (D8249). 

The standard covers material characteristics, physical requirements, and sampling for using “rotary kiln produced porous ceramic material” in topsoils. This material can increase soils’ ability to support plant growth, according to ASTM International member Michael Robeson. 

“Designers could use this new standard as a reference to help ensure that they get better soils for landscaping projects, and contractors could use it to help them determine the proper mixture for improving soil,” said Robeson, director of research and development, Profile Products LLC. 

According to Robeson, this effort supports global initiatives such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of supporting “Life on Land,” since use of the standard will help create healthier soil, plants, and trees.
