New Self-Consolidating Concrete Test Method to Assure Mix Optimization

Concrete producers of both ready-made and precast/prestressed concrete will be the primary users of a new standard recently approved by ASTM International Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates. The standard, C 1621/C 1621M, Test Method for Passing Ability of Self-Consolidating Concrete by J-Ring, is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee C09.47 on Self-Consolidating Concrete.

 

According to C09.47 chairman Martin Vachon, C 1621/C 1621M will mainly be used in the mix design phase of self-consolidating concrete to assure the proper mix optimization. It can also be used as a quality control tool to monitor production consistency.

 

"When poured in highly reinforced forms, self-consolidating concrete’s aggregate can bridge the gaps between rebars and restrict the concrete from flowing," says Vachon. "This test method can be used to quickly assess the SCC passing ability."

 

With the approval of C 1621/C 1621M and the 2005 approval of C 1611, Test Method for Slump Flow of Self-Consolidating Concrete, Subcommittee C09.47, which includes over 100 members from 16 countries, will be focusing on establishing test methods to assess the static and dynamic stability of self-consolidating concrete. Interested parties are invited to participate in the ongoing activities of the subcommittee.
