A new ASTM International standard will help calibrate a device that measures the friction of tires on highways.  

The new standard (E3145) was developed by ASTM International’s committee on vehicle-pavement systems (E17). Several years ago, this committee created a standard that measures friction using a dynamic-friction or “DF” tester. This new standard helps calibrate DF testers to ensure that they function properly and provide accurate results. 

“This new standard is important because it provides a method by which people who use the DF testers can calibrate the equipment themselves, helping to establish quality control without relying solely on manufacturer calibrations,” says ASTM International member Robin Tallon. 

Tallon, a project manager at The Transtec Group, says that DF testers are used by universities, contractors, consulting firms, transportation departments, and the U.S. Federal Highway Administration. Friction testing is often done for safety and regulatory purposes.
