New ASTM International Standard in Development for Cellular Wall Polypropylene Chambers

A newly proposed standard (WK54335, Specification for Cellular Wall Polypropylene (PP) Chambers) concerning storm water collection chambers is being developed. With cellular wall PP chambers being installed as part of road and parking lot construction, wheel load and soil weight place significant structural demand on the product. A structurally sound product is essential to ensure the safety of drivers and a long service life for the owner.

Although ASTM has similar standards already in place, ASTM member David Mailhot, technical director of StormTech, believes specific standards for cellular wall PP chambers will better guarantee the endurance of this increasingly in-demand product.

Standards F2418 (Polypropylene Corrugated Wall Stormwater Collection Chambers) and F2922 (Polyethylene Corrugated Wall Stormwater Collection Chambers) will act as the template for the new specification.

“ASTM is a reputable source that helps provide a level of protection to the public,” says Mailhot. “If the standard is approved, engineers and contractors can use this product with confidence that it will be durable and serve its intended purpose.” Interested parties, particularly cellular plastics experts, are invited to participate in the development of the standard.

ASTM welcomes participation in the development of its standards. Become a member at www.astm.org/JOIN.
