New ASTM Guide Will Help with Pumping Coolants and Other Heat-Transfer Fluids

A new guide will help with selecting, installing, and using pumping equipment that carries heat-transfer fluids such as coolants. The standard (D8046, Guide for Pumpability of Heat Transfer Fluids) was created by ASTM International members who are experts in petroleum products, liquid fuels, and lubricants (Committee D02).

The new guide will provide a common language between consumers of heat transfer fluids and producers of pumping equipment that carries those fluids.

ASTM member Jim Johnson, of the University of Texas at San Antonio, says, “Fluid pumpability is a complex issue because knowledge of the fluid characteristics and the type of pump and its installation will determine pumping capability and limitations.  Heat transfer fluids exhibit a wide range of physical properties that are important when selecting pumping equipment.”
