Manager from Standards Institution of Israel to Visit ASTM International Headquarters

Mr. Naphtali Pollak, senior project manager at the Standards Institution of Israel (SII), will spend time at ASTM International headquarters this fall as part of the ASTM Standards Expert Exchange Program (SEEP).

Mr. Pollak has worked in standards development at SII since 1996. As senior project manager, he prepares first drafts of Israeli national standards and directs various SII standardization committees, including those on food, medical equipment and geosynthetic products. A former food engineer and an expert on food labeling, he has also taught courses on food inspections for the Israel Ministry of Health.

A graduate of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel, where he earned a B.Sc. in food engineering and biotechnology, Mr. Pollak also holds an M.S. and a Ph.D. in food engineering from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mass., and he attended the Agricultural School at the University of Nottingham, Leicestershire, United Kingdom.

SEEP is a component of ASTM’s memorandum of understanding (MOU) program, which promotes communication between ASTM International and national standards bodies worldwide, fostering awareness of the standardization systems of all parties involved. The program facilitates the development of national standards that will aid each country's health, safety and environmental and economic conditions. SII and ASTM signed a memorandum of understanding in 2007.

As part of SEEP, standards experts from MOU countries participate in an intensive one-month training program at ASTM headquarters in West Conshohocken, Pa. During this time, they learn about ASTM International and its standards development process, observe the process in action by attending technical committee meetings, visit both federal government agencies and U.S.-based standards development organizations in Washington, D.C., and share information about their work and their home organization.

More information on ASTM International’s MOU program can be found on the ASTM Web site (www.astm.org/GLOBAL).
