ASTM International’s committee on copper and copper alloys (B05) presented its top annual award – the Award of Merit – to Horace Pops, president of Horace Pops Consulting, Inc., Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA. The prestigious award, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest recognition for individual contributions to developing standards. 

The committee honored Pops for outstanding leadership and service as chairman and vice-chairman, and for long-term development and industry leadership on copper rod for electrical purposes, refined copper, and advocacy of wire drawing technical issues. 

An ASTM International member since 1974, Pops has previously received the Award of Appreciation (1990, 1995), the Copper Club Award (2014), and the Lifetime Achievement Award (2017). The ASTM International committee on electrical conductors (B01) honored Pops with the Award of Appreciation (2009). He is also a member of the committee on nonferrous metals and alloys (B02).

Pops has held his current role since 2005, having previously held positions with Superior Essex and Mellon Institute. He holds a bachelor’s degree in metallurgy from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a master’s degree in metallurgy from Lehigh University, and a doctorate in metallurgy from the University of Pittsburgh. 

In addition to ASTM International, Pops is a member and past president of the Wire Association International, the American Institute of Mining Experts, and a member and fellow of the American Society for Metals.
