George E. Totten, Ph.D., Receives Sydney D. Andrews Scroll of Achievement from ASTM International Petroleum Committee

George E. Totten, Ph.D., president of G. E. Totten and Associates, LLC, in Seattle, Wash., where he also resides, has received the 2004 Sydney D. Andrews Scroll of Achievement for outstanding achievement in the field of petroleum products and lubricants. ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants has honored Totten for "his many contributions to advancing the aims of the society and the committee."

An ASTM International member since 1988, Totten is an active participant on a number of D02 groups. He also serves as chair of the ASTM Committee on Publications and on ASTM Committee G02 on Wear and Erosion. Outside ASTM International, Totten is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASM International, SAE International, and the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers.

Totten, who has been retired from his senior research scientist position at Union Carbide Corp. since 2001, has concentrated in areas of lubrication, hydraulic fluids, metal quenchants and exploratory research.

A graduate of Broome Community College with an A.A.S. in chemical technology, Totten earned his B.S. and M.S. in chemistry from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and his Ph.D. in physical and organic chemistry from New York University.
