ASTM International Makes Donations for China Earthquake Relief

ASTM International has contributed to the relief efforts for victims of the massive earthquake that struck the Eastern Sichuan region of China in May with both monetary and product donations to assist with emergency response work and rebuilding efforts.

ASTM International Visits Drexel University

Dr. Jonathan Cheng, associate professor of civil, architectural and environmental engineering, Drexel University, and Kevin Shanahan, Technical Committee Operations, ASTM International, participated in an educational event for engineering students at Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pa., on April 21, 2008.  

ASTM International Hosts Russian Delegation for Coordinated Program

Orlando, Fla., will be the location of a coordinated program being organized by ASTM International in cooperation with the Federal Agency on Technical Regulating and Metrology (GOST-R) and the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs.  The program, being co-sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International), the American Petroleum Institute (API International) and ASTM International,
will be held during the week of May 5, 2008, at the Omni Orlando Resort Hotel.
 

ASTM International Visits Eastern University

ASTM International continues to offer valuable information and resources on standards to students and educators around the world.  In the past, ASTM’s campus visits have taken place at schools with major engineering programs.  However, during a recent campus visit to Eastern University near Philadelphia, ASTM staff member Jim Olshefsky was asked to speak to an International Business class.
 

ASTM to Present at the 2nd International Seminar on Standardization in St. Petersburg, Russia

The 2nd International Seminar on Standardization (sponsored by Normdocs) will be held at the Rossia Hotel in St. Petersburg, Russia, on April 21-23, 2008.  The seminar is intended for quality and technical experts who deal with international standards and related information tools.

ASTM International Board of Directors to Hold April Meeting in Stockholm

Stockholm will be the location of the 2008 spring meeting of the ASTM International board of directors.  The ASTM board meetings, as well as other events, will take place in Sweden during the week of April 21, 2008.
 
The selection of Stockholm as host city for the ASTM leadership team came at the invitation of Lars Flink, CEO of the Swedish Standards Institute (SIS), which is headquartered in Stockholm. Mr. Flink recently completed a three-year term as a member of the ASTM board. SIS is the national standards body of Sweden.
 

ASTM International 2008 Advantage Award Paper Competition

ASTM International, one of the world’s largest standards developing organizations, is accepting papers for the 2008 ASTM Advantage Award, a paper competition with prizes up to $15,000. The award is an opportunity for the users of ASTM International standards worldwide to convey the positive outcomes of utilizing an ASTM standard or a group of ASTM standards.

International Effort Takes Critical Steps to Accelerate Growth of Global Biofuels Market

The governments of the United States, Brazil and the European Union (EU)—the world’s major producers of biofuels—today released an analysis of current biofuel specifications with the goal of facilitating expanded trade of these renewable energy sources. Spurred by increased market demands, this report was solicited by the U.S. and Brazilian governments and the European Commission (EC) on behalf of the EU, with the work conducted by an international group of fuel standards experts.

ASTM Petroleum Training Courses Available in the Middle East

ASTM International training courses in the area of petroleum standardization are offered in the Gulf Cooperation Council, Middle East and Asia. Since 2003, the Arabian Fuels Technology Center has been presenting “Aviation Fuels: Specifications and Test Methods” and “Transportation Fuels Technology: Gasoline, Diesel and Aviation Fuels” to interested participants throughout the region.

ASTM International To Hold Organizational Meeting for New Activity on Home Inspection Services

On Sept. 24, 2007, ASTM International (ASTM) will hold an organizational meeting for a new standards development activity on Home Inspection Services. The meeting will take place at ASTM Headquarters in West Conshohocken, Pa. (see http://www.astm.org/MEETINGS/directions.htm for directions and http://www.astm.org/MEETINGS/hotels.htm for accommodations). The meeting will commence at 9 a.m. and adjourn at approximately 4 p.m. NOTE: There is no fee to attend this meeting.
