Frederick Gelfant Honored with Top Annual Award from Key ASTM International Committee

ASTM International’s committee on paint and related coating, materials, and application (D01) presented its top annual award – the Award of Merit – to Fred Gelfant, vice president of R&D for Stonhard in Maple Shade, New Jersey, USA. The prestigious award, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest recognition for individual contributions to developing standards. 

The committee honored Gelfant for his active leadership role in the committee, as well as his outstanding contributions and dedication to the preservation of standards related to mortars, grouts, monolithic surfacings, and polymer concrete. He has previously received two Awards of Appreciation (2008, 2013), and the Award of Excellence (2018). Gelfant is known by colleagues as a vital contributor of time and effort to ensuring the creation and improvement of standards.

An ASTM International member since 1993, Gelfant has been with Stonhard since 1990 and at his current position since 1999, having previously held the positions of R&D Supervisor at Shaw Pipe Protection and R&D Staff at Canadian Gypsum. He holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and a master’s degree in engineering from NJIT in Newark, New Jersey, USA.

In addition to ASTM International, Gelfant is a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario and the Society for Protective Coatings. He also serves on the ASTM committees on chemical-resistant nonmetallic materials (C03), paint and related coatings, materials, and applications (D01), road and paving materials (D04), color and appearance (E12), resilient floor coverings (F06), and pedestrian/walkway safety and footwear (F13).
