Angelo Lampousis, a lecturer at the City College of New York, has won the 2019 Professor of the Year Award from ASTM International. 

“Angelo Lampousis is committed to engaging and inspiring his students,” says Katharine Morgan, president of ASTM International. “By using ASTM International standards in his classroom, Angelo highlights the importance of standards and the standards development process.” 

The ASTM International Professor of the Year Award recognizes and rewards the contributions of educators in developing students’ understanding of the organization’s 13,000 technical standards which are used in dozens of industries.

Since 2013, Lampousis has been a lecturer in earth and atmospheric sciences at CCNY. Prior to that, he was a postdoctoral research associate at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey, and an adjunct assistant professor of geography at Hunter College, part of City University of New York.  

Pengfei Zhang, Ph.D., professor and chair of the department of earth and atmospheric sciences at City College of New York, said, “Angelo has been instrumental in connecting our department with the community of environmental professionals in our region and nationally by using ASTM standards in his teaching.” He added that, since 2012, Lampousis has been the faculty sponsor of a memorandum of understanding between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 2 and the City College of New York that has yielded multiple summer internships for students. 

Zhang also notes Lampousis has collaborated with staff from New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority to develop teaching modules based on standards, an effort that was recently recognized by a grant from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Lampousis received a bachelor’s degree from the department of agriculture’s school of geotechnical sciences at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.  He went on to earn his master’s in earth and environmental sciences and doctoral degree in environmental geophysics, both from the Graduate School and University Center, City University of New York. 

An ASTM International member since 2010, Lampousis belongs to ASTM International committees on soil and rock (D18) and environmental assessment, risk management, and corrective action (E50).
