ASTM International Bryant Mather Award Honors Standards Work of Louis U. Spellman

The 2004 Bryant Mather Award honors Louis U. Spellman, a consultant to the cement industry headquartered in Austin, Texas, for his work to further the continuing development of standards for hydraulic cement. ASTM International Committee C01 on Cement gave the award to Spellman, an ASTM Award of Merit recipient and ASTM fellow, in December.

Linde Leadership Award Bestowed on Alcoas Carroll D. Davis

Carroll D. Davis, section head of analytical chemistry for the Alcoa Technical Center in Alcoa Center, Pa., was honored with the ASTM International Ted Linde Leadership Award in recognition of his leadership skills and especially for an exemplary job as main committee chairman, a post he has filled since 2000. Davis received the award from ASTM Committee E01 on Analytical Chemistry for Metals, Ores and Related Materials, a 275-member committee with jurisdiction over some 165 standards.

Davis is a resident of Irwin, Pa.

George E. Totten, Ph.D., Receives Sydney D. Andrews Scroll of Achievement from ASTM International Petroleum Committee

George E. Totten, Ph.D., president of G. E. Totten and Associates, LLC, in Seattle, Wash., where he also resides, has received the 2004 Sydney D. Andrews Scroll of Achievement for outstanding achievement in the field of petroleum products and lubricants. ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants has honored Totten for "his many contributions to advancing the aims of the society and the committee."

ASTM International Fatigue Achievement Award Given to Norman E. Dowling, Ph.D.

The Fatigue Achievement Award has been given to Norman E. Dowling, Ph.D., of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va., by ASTM International Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture. Dowling, who is a professor in the Engineering Science and Mechanics Department, and also in the Materials Science and Engineering Department, has been recognized for his contributions to the field of fatigue of materials.

Dowling resides in Blacksburg, Va.
