ASTM Reactive and Refractory Metals Committee Developing New Forging Stock Standard

Ingot producers, forge shops and titanium service centers that hold ingot for conversion by contract forge shops will be the primary users of a proposed new ASTM International standard from Committee B10 on Reactive and Refractory Metals and Alloys. ASTM WK42957, Specification for Titanium and Titanium Alloy Forging Stock, is being developed by Subcommittee B10.01 on Titanium.

According to James McMaster, MC Consulting and B10 member, the product detailed in WK42957 is an intermediate between ingot covered by ASTM B977, Specification for Titanium and Titanium Ingots, and ASTM B348, Specification for Titanium and Titanium Alloy Bars and Billets.

“Material to be covered by ASTM WK42957 is expected to be bought and sold between ingot producers who often perform a preliminary forging operation to reduce the material size to something smaller that forge shops can handle, without the additional testing for a finished product like ASTM B348 bar and billet,” says McMaster. “It is expected that the normal product would be reduced in size entirely in the higher beta temperature range that does not produce the kind of grain structure and other refinements expected in finished mill products.” This product, while widely used today, is usually bought with individual customer standards that reference various ASTM product specifications for common requirements, such as chemistry.
