ASTM Plastic Piping Committee Developing Proposed Standard on Pipe for Mine Heap Leach Aeration

While polyethylene pipe has been used in mining applications for years, there is currently a need for standards to ensure the adequate performance of PE pipe in difficult conditions, such as high load and acid or alkali environments. ASTM International Committee F17 on Plastic Piping Systems is currently developing one such standard, ASTM WK37233, Specification for Corrugated Polyethylene Pipe and Fittings for Mine Heap Leach Aeration Applications.

ASTM WK37233 is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee F17.26 on Olefin Based Pipe. It covers requirements and test methods for materials, workmanship, dimensions, perforations, pipe stiffness, elongation, joint separation resistance, quality of extruded polyethylene, brittleness, testing and marking of corrugated polyethylene pipe and fittings for mine heap leach pile aeration.

“This proposed standard will assure product performance and provide designs that will improve the chemical reaction within the heap leach ore pipe, increasing yields, primarily copper,” says James Goddard, an independent consultant and F17 member. Goddard notes that, once approved, the proposed standard will potentially be used worldwide by mining companies and their design engineers.

All interested parties are invited to participate in the ongoing development of ASTM WK37233.

ASTM International welcomes participation in the development of its standards. For more information on becoming an ASTM member, visit www.astm.org/JOIN.
