ASTM International Invites Participation in New Pervious Concrete Subcommittee

ASTM International Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates invites all interested parties to attend the first meeting of new Subcommittee C09.49 on Pervious Concrete during the June ASTM Committee Week in Norfolk, Va. The Executive Subcommittee of C09 approved the formation of the subcommittee after more than 60 attendees expressed significant interest and feedback at a formational meeting in December 2006.

The C09 Executive Subcommittee approved the nomination of Karthik Obla, managing director,  research and materials engineering, National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, to chair the new subcommittee.

“Many concrete industry experts consider pervious concrete to be the next big thing in the marketplace,” stated Obla in an article in the October 2006 issue of Standardization News. Obla noted at the time that there has been a resurgence in interest in the material due to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s recent recognition of the use of pervious concrete as a best management practice for storm water management. An increasing focus on sustainability and the green movement has also contributed to the importance of pervious concrete as a building material.

Obla will establish task groups to initiate the standards development process. Possible standards to be developed include density, permeability and strength tests.
