ASTM International to Host Workshop on Zinc

ASTM International is hosting the Workshop on How Zinc is Used in Hot-Dip Galvanizing, to be held May 8, 2023, at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel, Denver, Colorado (USA). The workshop is sponsored by ASTM committees on metallic-coated iron and steel products (A05) and on nonferrous metals and alloys (B02). It will be held in conjunction with the May standards development meetings of the committee.

This workshop will provide a forum for members of both committees to better understand the mutually beneficial relationship between A05 and B02.04. Presentations will include an overview of reasons for different levels of aluminum in B852 zinc, refining and production methods, quality control requirements, and much more.

Topics for this workshop include:

  • Ore to zinc process and methods to remove unwanted residual elements;
  • Zinc ingot production for continuous and general galvanizing;
  • Zinc alloys for hot-dip galvanizing;
  • Review of continuous galvanizing bath arrangement and constituents;
  • Why multiple Al levels in B842 are need and how used by CGL lines;
  • Review of reasons for restricted lead in B852 zinc;
  • Short review of Zn-5% Al and Zn-Al-Mg metallurgy; and
  • Production of HD articles: bath chemistry, effect of steel chemistry on coating, coating weight and appearance.

Registration opens approximately 10 weeks before the start of the workshop. Additional information is available from the workshop’s technical chairs, Gary Dallin (gdallin@cogeco.da) and Bernardo Duran (bduran@zinc.org).
