ASTM International to Host Third Additive Manufacturing Technologies Workshop

The ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence will host its third workshop on additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, Feb. 10, at the Union Complex at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).

The one-day event aims to help attendees gain a comprehensive understanding of the entire process chain for additive manufacturing (also known as 3D printing), including:

  • data,
  • feedstock,
  • design and simulation,
  • process qualification,
  • testing,
  • inspection, and,
  • specific industry sector requirements.

“This important workshop will address AM application requirements in sectors such as aerospace, medical, defense, energy, construction, and automotive,” said Dr. Nima Shamsaei, director of the National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence at Auburn University, which hosted one of the previous workshops. “We will cover gaps in AM standardization and the research initiatives from the Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence to address these gaps.”

“The interactive sessions with experts will provide a unique opportunity for participants to dive into technological issues and to understand more about standardized practices,” said Dr. John Slotwinski, chair of the ASTM International additive manufacturing technologies committee.

All additive manufacturing stakeholders, including industry, academia, and government agency representatives, are welcome to attend. Each session is designed with a focus on industry needs and the role that standards can play in driving qualification and certification.

“We are excited to host this workshop at UTEP and are looking forward to a lively panel discussion that will focus on the challenges and opportunities of AM adoption in a variety of industry sectors,” said Dr. Frank Medina, associate professor at UTEP.
