ASTM International’s environmental assessment, risk management, and corrective action committee (E50) is looking to add participants to help revise two standards.  The standards focus on conducting environmental baseline surveys (D6008) and classifying the environmental condition of property area types for disposition and transfer of federal facilities and property under Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) and other processes (D5746).

According to ASTM International member John Tabella, the committee determined a need to update these standards, at least in part, to help ensure that current best practices and concepts in one of ASTM International’s most widely-used standard, Phase I environmental site assessment process (E1527), are, in turn, incorporated into D6008 and D5746.

These standards are used heavily by U.S. government agencies (e.g., Department of Defense, Defense Logistics Agency, Environmental Protection Agency, General Services Administration, Department of the Interior) and private contractors that support those agencies, Tabella notes.  Therefore, he says, the committee is particularly interested in increasing participation of agency officials involved in acquiring and disposing of property. The committee is also open to more environmental consultants helping in this effort. 

This effort directly relates to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on good health and well-being (#3), clean water and sanitation (#6), and decent work and economic growth (#8).
