ASTM International Committee on Wood Honors Bradford Douglas with Award of Merit

Bradford Douglas, vice president of engineering at the American Wood Council in Leesburg, Virginia, has received the Award of Merit and title of fellow from ASTM International Committee D07 on Wood.

The Award of Merit is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities. The committee cited Douglas for both his leadership and many technical contributions to the development of ASTM wood engineering standards.

An active ASTM member since 1985, Douglas serves as vice chairman of Subcommittee D07.05 on Wood Assemblies and chairs its related sections. He received the D07 L.J. Markwardt Award in 1998 for his research and standards activities related to wood assemblies. Douglas is also active on several other ASTM committees, including those on Gypsum, Thermal Insulation, Plastics, Performance of Buildings and Fasteners.

A graduate of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia, where he received a bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering, Douglas has more than 32 years of experience in the wood industry. Past roles include systems design engineer and research manager at the National Forest Products Association and director of engineering at the American Forest and Paper Association. These groups were folded into the American Wood Council, which was re-chartered in 2010 to serve the modern wood products industry. Douglas assumed his current role that same year.

Within the wider engineering community, Douglas is known as a structural engineering leader and a key developer of the ANSI/AWC National Design Specification for Wood Construction, Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic, and the Wood Frame Construction Manual. A licensed professional engineer in the state of Virginia, he is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Institute of Building Sciences Building Seismic Safety Council, and the Structural Standards Coordinating Council in addition to ASTM.
