John Ruschau, distinguished research engineer at the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) in Dayton, Ohio, USA, was honored with the Edward T. Wessel Award from the ASTM International committee on fatigue and fracture (E08).  

An ASTM International member since 1979, Ruschau was recognized for his exceptional leadership, role as a mentor in the development of standards based on fracture mechanics technology, and exemplary citizenship in all matters related to ASTM and the committee.

Ruschau has previously received the Award of Appreciation five times (1993, 1999, 2002, 2011, 2016). In addition, the committee presented Ruschau with the Award of Merit in 2016. This prestigious award, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest recognition for individual contributions to developing standards.  

Prior to retiring from full-time service in 2016, Ruschau served as the division head for Structural Integrity with UDRI since 2009, having previously served as research engineer and group leader for materials test and evaluation, all with the organization. He holds a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Dayton and is a Professional Engineer in the state of Ohio.
