ASTM International’s cannabis committee (D37) has launched a new subcommittee focused on creating voluntary standards that support cannabis devices and appliances.
Members say the goal of the new subcommittee is to develop standards relating to cannabis devices (used for consumption) and appliances (used for personal cultivation and home production). Since the committee’s formation in 2017, members had been discussing creating this subcommittee.
ASTM International member Tyler Kibler has been named chairman of the new subcommittee.
“The greatest potential of the subcommittee will be fully realized through collaboration and innovation from this diverse group of companies and people,” says Kibler, director of industrial design at Aurora Cannabis Inc.
Kibler says the subcommittee is working on proposed standards that include but are not limited to specifications for:
- two-way authenticated safety lockout mechanisms in cannabis devices,
- electrical and mechanical systems in cannabis devices,
- hardware verification and validation protocols for cannabis devices and appliances,
- grow boxes and dry herb vaporizers,
- electrical and safety applications for home grown cultivation, and more.
